************************************************************************* Dramatic rescue turning point in many lives An excellent three part news story about two ice climbers who become lost in a severe snowstorm on Mount Washington. It lead to a three day search, a volunteer searcher's death, bitter survival, and finally the dramatic rescue. The three articles were published in the Banger Daily News. The first article: Dramatic rescue turning point in many lives Climbers faced death on Mount Washington http://www.bangornews.com/editorialnews/article.html?ID=49324 focuses on the actual search. The article is excellent for both being well written and giving insight into lost person behavior. The second article: Rescued ice climbers rebuilt lives Experience sparked new adventures into science, prosthetics, religion http://www.bangornews.com/editorialnews/article.html?ID=49398 examines the effects the search has on the lives of the rescued. The article gives us the chance to ponder critical incident stress among those we rescue and the long term effects SAR providers have on those we come in contact with. The third article: Colleagues, family still ponder meaning of rescuer’s death http://www.bangornews.com/editorialnews/article.html?ID=49462 looks at the lingering effects of the incident on the family and fellow SAR providers. Once again it provides excellent emotional insight. ************************************************************************ 121.5, 406, Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) Information Site

While obtaining a lost person report form you discover the sister of the missing subject suffers from Alzheimer's disease. It is only logical to wonder what are the chances of your search subject also suffering from the disease. A recent study published by the Journal of American Medical of Association looked at the relatives and spouses of 2339 white people suffering from Alzheimer's (AD) and also 255 African American's with AD. They found the chance of developing AD by the age of 85 was 43.7% for African American who had a parent, brother, sister, or children who had the disease. Among white relatives the percentage was 26.9%. The article is a bit scientific, but it provides good information.

It even may have the ability to reverse the effects of Alzheimer's disease. The fact that is now being tested in humans demonstrates a lot of progress has been made.http://www.the-scientist.com/yr2002/jan/research_020121.html When you link to the site for the first time you will be asked to register but it really was rather harmless. ************************************************************************* A well written report that gives a good synopsis of the changing role of emergency management. http://www.colorado.edu/hazards/qr/qr140/qr140.html ************************************************************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------------- NASAR Conference dates and location The National Association for Search and Rescue's 30th Annual Conference and Exhibition will be held at the Hilton, Charlotte University Place.
